Default crisis (违约危机)

Default crisis (违约危机 wéiyuē wēijī), or sovereign debt crisis (主权债务危机 zhǔquán zhàiwù wéijī), refers to the failure of a country’s government to fulfill its external debt repayment obligations in time.

  • 违约 (wéiyuē) derives from

(wéi) as in violating (违反 wéifǎn) or seperating/ being apart (久违 jiǔwéi).

(yuē) as in appointment (预约 yùyuē), or contract (合约 héyuē).

  • 危机 (wēijī) derives from

(wēi) as in dangerous (危险 wēixiǎn) or harm (危害 wēihài). (jī) as in chance (机会 jīhuì), plane (飞机 fēijī) or lively (生机 shēngjī).

危机 (wēijī) as in economic crisis (经济危机 jīngjì wēijī) or sense of crisis (危机意识 wēijī yìshī).

  • 主权 (zhǔquán) refers to the possession of supreme or ultimate power. 主权 (zhǔquán) as in a sovereign state (主权国家 zhǔquán guójiā).
  • 债务 (zhàiwù) derives from

 (zhài) as in paying back debt (还债 huánzhài), creditors (债主 zhàizhǔ) or creditor’s right (债权 zhàiquán).

 (wù) as in affair (事务 shìwù) or work (工务 gōngwù).
