Depreciation (贬值)

Depreciation (贬值 biǎnzhí) refers to a decease (贬低 biǎndī) in the price or value (价值 jiàzhí) of assets.  

  • 贬 (biǎn) contains (贝 bèi) which means shell or money, and (乏 fá) which means lack of sth.. 贬 (biǎn) as in disparaging (贬低 biǎndī) or negative words (贬义词 biǎnyìcí).
  • 值 (zhí) as in value (价值 jiàzhí), worth (值得 zhídé) or ratio (比值 bǐzhí).

    Depreciation (折旧 zhéjiù) refers to a decrease in the value of an asset over time. It is used to allocate the cost of an asset over the period of time the asset is expected to be used.

    • 折 (zhé) as in discount (打折 dǎzhé), folding (对折 duìzhé) or turning point (转折 zhuǎnzhé).
    • 旧 (jiù) as in old (旧的 jiùdē), still (仍旧 réngjiù) or traditional (守旧 shǒujiù).
