Inflation rate (通货膨胀率 tōnghuò péngzhàng lǜ) measures how fast a currency is devalued during a time period. In other words, it refers to the percentage increase in the price level.
- 通 (tōng) as in circulation (流通 liútōng), passing (通过 tōngguò) or smooth (通顺 tōngshùn).
- 货 (huò) as in commodity or goods (货品 huòpǐn), money (通货 tōnghuò). The underlying radical is 贝 (bèi), which originally refers to money.
- Both 膨 (péng) and 胀 (zhàng) refers to expand, swell, or dilate. 膨胀 (péngzhàng) as in confidence growth (信心膨胀 xìnxīn péngzhàng), thermal expansion (热膨胀 rèpéngzhàng).
- 率 (lǜ) as in ratio (比率 bǐlǜ), heart rate(心率 xīnlǜ), or probability (几率 jīlǜ).
