Rate of return (收益率)

Rate of return (收益率 shōuyì lǜ) is the net gain or loss of an investment over a period of time, which is usually expressed as an annual percentage calculated from the market price, face value, interest rate, and maturity.

  • (shōu) as in income (收入 shōurù), receiving (收到 shōudào) or collecting (收集 shōují); (yì) means benefits, as in beneficial insect (益虫 yìchóng) or benefit (益处 yìchù). 收益 (shōuyì) means profit or gains.
  • (lǜ) as in efficiency (效率 xiàolǜ) or probability (概率 gàilǜ).
