Rent seeking (寻租 xún zū), or rent-seeking, refers to an attempt to obtain wealth through the manipulation or monopoly of social and economic resources without benefiting the society.
- 寻 (xún) as in looking for (寻找 xúnzhǎo) or ordinary (寻常 xúncháng).
- 租 (zū) as in concession (租界 zūjiè) or hiring out (出租 chūzū).
