Trade balance (贸易差额 màoyì chā’é) is the net sum of a country’s trade earnings from exports and its expenditures on imports.

- 贸 (mào) has the radical “贝” which means shell (贝壳 bèiké). 贝 (bèi) was originally used as money in ancient times. 易 (yì) as in easy (容易 róngyì) or deal (交易 jiāoyì). 贸易 (màoyì) as in export trade (出口贸易 chūkǒu màoyì).
- 差 (chā) as in gap (差距 chājù), difference (差异 chāyì or 差别 chābié) or mistake (差错 chācuò); 额 (é) as in extra (额外 é’wài), amount of money (金额 jīn’é) or total (总额 zǒng’é).
